Whilst not a true psychedelic in the traditional sense, Ketamine is a very interesting substance. It works, in very basic, by disengaging the hypothalamus (essentially a router between the conscious brain and the central nervous system). This is how it is efficacious as an anaesthetic. It would seem also, from personal as well as anecdotal experience that the central nervous system is the conscious minds connection to linear time, as the liminal states created when the disconnection is complete enough to allow the drifting in spacetime feeling without being so complete as to render the traveller unconscious.
